Can I make the high school field hockey team even though I've never played?

I'm 14 now, freshman next year but I need to know ahead of time (if I need to prepare and get fit) if it's necessary to have experience of playing field hockey before? Would they show me how to hold a stick, etc. on the first tryout day? Should I attend captain's practices?|||Sure you should try out! Watch a few games on tv to get a feel for it but hey apparently John Madden from the New Jersey Devils started playing ice hockey when he was 16 or 18 yrs of age. You might be surprised that you have hidden talent, give it a shot! You have nothing to lose!
