im trying out for jv field hockey at my high school next month, and i have no idea what im supposed to bring. i dont own cleats or mouth guards or knee protectors or a stick, so what should i do? do i need all that? i know i need a mouthguard at least, so im going to get that but do they provide the sticks and can i just wear tennis shoes? please help, im kinda scared :'(|||In order to play you need a stick, shinguards, a mouthguard, cleats, and goggles. Out of those things you most definitely need to get a mouthguard and shinguards. Neither of those things should be too hard to find. The mouthguard should be $1-2 and you could find one at any athletic store. Shinguards are similar to those used in soccer, should be $10-20 and can be found at any athletic store.
You can wear tennis shoes, but it is safer to wear cleats. Tennis shoes aren't designed for lateral(side to side) movement, and they don't grip the ground as well as cleats.
Your school may provide sticks/goggles for students who don't have them, but you would need to email the coach to find out. If they don't, you can get an okay stick for around $30. Cheap goggles may be harder to find(goggles are a new rule this year, so everyone is buying them). The wire ones can be $30-40 dollars, but plastic ones can cost less (harder to find).
Chart below is from Dick's Sporting Goods
Stick Length by Height
When choosing a field hockey stick, select the length that you can control comfortably. Place the index finger of your right hand on your right hip bone. Place your middle and ring finger next to your index finger. The top of the stick should approximately reach the side of your ring finger.
Consult this chart to help you determine which stick length is right for you:
