I'm starting high school this year and thinking of trying out for junior girls field hockey but not sure how injury-prone the sport is. It would only be gr. 9's and 10's. I don't weigh much but I'm fast and can usually be strong and ignore the pain.
So any idea?
If it helps, a scale of 1-10 and a list of common injuries?
Thanks!|||I've never played or watched a game of field hockey before but my cousin played in high school and in her second game, she was hit in the face with the field hockey stick and cracked her tooth in half. I would think that field hockey and ice hockey may have similar injuries but I'm not positive.|||I'm currently playing my second year of high school field hockey and I have never gotten injured. I would say probably a 2, as long as you're very careful. The most common injury is to the index finger, because a lot of people make the mistake of extending their index finger down the stick: this is really dangerous because it could get hit by another stick very easily. There's also a risk of concussion since you don't wear helmets, but wearing a mouthguard and protective goggles can help protect you from this. But since field hockey is not as physical a sport as soccer, ice hockey, etc, there is not a huge risk of injury as in other sports.|||Field hockey is a really, really great sport! I've been playing for three years and I've only gotten a few injuries...I broke my finger after getting hit with a stick in 8th grade, and just this past week I got a concussion after getting a shoulder to the head. Any other injuries I've sustained have just been overuse injuries like shin splints and knee pain, but those come with any sport, really. You sound like you're in good shape, so I think you'd be fine as long as you play smart. It does get more pushy and physical as you get into higher levels, but I don't think you have anything to worry about :)
It's a really fun sport and worth what little pain you may have to endure, I promise :D|||probaly like 4. ive never been injured by field hockey myself, but i know of one girl who got a concussion from the ball hitting her head. and i know of a few girls who strained their butts or quads, but that could happen in any sport really. the only new danger in playing field hockey is the balls i guess.. but honestly with experience it shouldnt be too big of a danger! just be in good shape, and stretch!
